Shapping Colombia: Towards a sustainable future

6th Colombian Conference in Boston

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 laid a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for humanity and the planet. It established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to address the global socio-economic and environmental challenges humanity is facing through a global partnership.

Colombia has set a roadmap to implement the SDGs and multiple efforts have been made both in the public and private sector. Although there is still much to be done, numerous grass-roots organizations, public and private companies, and the government in Colombia are actively responding to the challenges posed by the SDGs. The 2019 VI Colombian Conference mission is to raise awareness, and to help augment these initiatives. The conference will provide an academic setting to present recommendations and foster an open, critical, and interdisciplinary dialogue between stakeholders, scholars, students, and the general public.

The theme for the 2019 Colombia Conference will be "Shaping Colombia: towards sustainable development” and will take place from April 5 to 7, 2019 at BU, Harvard, and MIT. It will be structured around the following topics: 1) How to Build a Lasting and Sustainable Peace?, 2) Education, 3) Cities, 4) Industries 4.0, 5) Rural development and indigenous innovation, 6) Business and Entrepreneurship, 7) Venezuelan Migration in Colombia, 8) Memorials and Symbolic Reparations, 9) Gender Equality; and 10) Health, sport and disaster response, 11) Afro-Colombian Culture and Black Pacific Resistance, 12) A look at the region through the cinema lens.

These topics will be explored through panels, workshops, unconferences, discussions, as well as artistic, audiovisual and theatrical exhibits.

The Conference is organized by the Harvard Colombian Student Society, the Colombian Student Association at MIT, the Colombian Student Association at BU, and Columbia University.  It is sponsored by the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS) at Harvard University, the Boston University Pardee School of Global studies, and the Boston University Department of History of Arts & Architecture.

We hope to see you there!
